Tri-Valley Class of 1978 Alumni Newsletter
Tri-Valley Class of 1978 Alumni Newsletter
September 21, 2004
I think we've arrived at last to the final version of this newsletter. Thanks to John K, Alice, Lynn, and Dorothy McGuire Conklin for the additional classmate information, they have their own sections in this message. And to Donna, Lisa, and Phil G for the sustained enthusiasm. As well as to Sylvia and Debra Terbush, Joan Hall, Joyce Hall Rice, Linda Smith, Carol Dexheimer, Eileen Doherty, Clayton Starkweather, Alice Owens Wisniewski, Rich Kovacs, Keith Eighmey, Chris Denman, Dorothy McGuire Conklin, Pete Hepburn, and Peggy Bingham McCormick for the information and help they provided. And special thanks to Bob Finch for creating the alumni website www.tvcsalum.org, if not for this site, this newsletter would never have happened. Look at the 1978 photo section for some some pictures of our class (old and new). You’ll find pictures for nearly all other prior years (back to 1950) on the site as well, mainly from yearbooks (thank you Alton Hall for access to your massive TVCS yearbook collection). Additional yearbooks were also provided by my parents, Chris Denman, and Keith Eighmey. In particular I would suggest that you look at the mid 70’s, see how many older kids you forgot completely about. Also for a little fun take a look at the names of all the people we have compiled that were in our class, but left our class before graduation, see if you can come up with any more, I’m sure some of you were friends with some of the people we’ve missed and would remember them. You know I’ll do anything to get you people to “jump in”. This has been such a blast!!!
Alice Dexheimer Karsko - Occupational Therapist near Wilkes Barre, PA., she's also involved with Vacation Bible Studies, married to Michael, has a 7 year old daughter, 3 year old son.
Phil Galvano - Runs the Galvano Golf Academy in FL. married with two children. refer to www.galvanogolf.com,
Clayton Starkweather - System Specialist, Micros Systems, in Dallas/FortWorth area, married to Katrina, has one son, one daughter, The Clayton family website: http://www.starkweather.ws, just created so it's a little sparse at the moment. Clayton’s e-mail address is posted on the alumni website.
Joyce Hall Rice - From a message sent by Joyce:
“Hi Keith, My mom told me she had been helping you to locate people around the area and has been passing the newsletters on to me. I've been meaning to email you with my address and just haven't gotten to it. You've done a great job getting this email newsletter started and keeping us updated. It sure has been great to hear what so many of the class of '78 gang have been up to. I've been up to
pretty much the same stuff as everyone else; husband, kids, work, homework, activities with a little time left for travel and fun. My daughter Erin is 15 and goes to John Jay HS with 2000 kids, which is so hard to adjust to after TVCS and our huge class of 60. My son Brock the "Lego King" is 11 and in 5th grade. They both keep us busy with sports, scouts and friends. We've lived in Hopewell Jct near Poughkeepsie for about 12 years now and before that Putnam and Westchester counties. I have worked for a few local hospitals and am now at Danbury Hospital where I manage the Health Information Services Dept (Medical Records). I really enjoy my work implementing software, managing projects, keeping up with state and federal regulation and convincing the administrators that I need a bigger budget, but never a dull moment for the most part. My husband Ron works mostly in CT as a carpenter with a small company and does a lot with the cub scouts. We make it back to Grahamsville a few times a year to visit the folks and soak up the sights of Sullivan County. For those who haven't been back, TVCS sure looks different than it did when we were there with all kinds of new additions and construction. I would love to see everyone at some point, if you have ideas about a reunion please let me know I would be glad to help. I did reconnect with Linda Smith about 2 years ago and we managed to get together last Thanksgiving, it was so good to catch up on all the years we had missed. She has lived in the Boston area since college and really likes it there. Well thanks for all your efforts in tracking us all down. I hope you have a great holiday season.
The class that's great is '78! (Am I the only one who'd forgotten that expression? - keith)

Mike Burnich
– From a message sent by Mike: “I've been meaning to get back with you since the
beginning of all this correspondence to give a little update, and say thanks
for the effort on your part. I guess
your final note/this being Christmas season was finally enough to get me off my
butt. I've really enjoyed the postings from everyone, and hearing that all is
mostly well. As for me, I graduated Syracuse Univ. in '82 in Geology and ended
up in Houston in '83 just in time for the oil bust down here. (No harm though, I
hear it's a pretty cutthroat biz anyway). I spent the next few years in the
restaurant industry, and enjoyed that part of my life very much. I ended up
leaving that to take a job with the U.S. Geol. Survey. We do surface and
ground water studies in Houston and SE Texas, so on good days we get paid to
drive a boat around all day...someone has to do it! Actually, the work's
interesting and varied, and I like it
here very much. Except for a very
short stint in PA, I've been here the whole time. I get up to N.Y occasionally
to visit the siblings.
I was last up there in '98 and saw Lynn while
visiting my brother Steve in G-ville. I haven't kept in touch with many since
back in the 80's, I do speak with Leesa K. every once in a while and we try to
keep up
with things as much as possible. I recently
earned my real estate license and am planning on doing some of that too, but in
the meantime I've met the fabulous Lindy, who
is a realtor here, and has agreed to
marry me in April. I've been married once before: no kids, one dog.
So......life has been busy lately, but very exciting, with lots to look forward
to. I run a little off and on.....mostly off lately, but plan
on getting back to it soon.......after
the holidays....sure I do......
I have another e-mail I can be reached at:
mburnich@yahoo.com that
might be better for the newsletter, but if you get back to me, this address is
fine. Take care Keith, and thanks again
for bringing us all a little closer.

Becky White Petrutiu - From a message sent by Becky: “It is OK to publish my home email address to others. I am currently writing this while on vacation and visiting relatives in Wyoming. Had hoped to see Jeff Brown in Yellowstone, but he moved 1 month before I arrived! After deciding not to pursue ballet professionally, I moved out west. I graduated from University of Wyoming in 1986 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After working 5 years with TI in Dallas and 5 years with Zilog in Boise Idaho where my son was born, I moved to Tempe AZ and worked for Motorola for 7 years. All were great places to live, and I was able to continue dancing ballet for pleasure and fitness both during University, and later performing with Ballet Dallas. I have been able to take classes regularly wherever I have lived and enjoy helping young dancers through scholarships and encouragement. For the last 3 years I have been working as an engineering manager for Motorola in Toulouse, France. Toulouse is in the south of France near the Pyrenees Mountains, just a little over an hours drive from the Mediterranean. It is so lovely here that I might stay forever. I have been divorced 10 years, but for the last 1.5 years have been with a wonderful man (French) and am thinking of marrying again. I have been fortunate enough to get back to Frost Valley on occasion and have seen Margie Turner and Jeff Brown now and then, but not often enough. My Dad is now living on Anna Maria Island off the coast of Tampa, Florida and I take a lot of vacation time there now. We'll see. Maybe next year I can visit Grahamsville again and look up some old friends from the class. Best wishes, Becky”
Recent update is that she’s buying a house, looks like she’s going to be staying a while longer!!
Alice Owens Wisniewski
- From a message sent by Alice: “Gosh, I'm surprised you found me. Great job.
You'll have to let me know how you did it. I'm guessing through Classmates? I
had Mrs. West for Kindergarten.
Mrs. Gridley for 1st. Mrs. Ferand for 2nd. (my mind is blank...Is that one
right?) Mrs. Conroy for 3rd. I remember some classmates and in fact found
my Kindergarten picture not too long ago, too bad I can't remember where it is
now. Wow, there were only 66 in the graduating class? We were over 400. Just
think, If I'd stayed at Tri Valley, I might have been somebody. We moved
to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1969. Married in 1980 to Robert Wisniewski. 1
stepson, 1 daughter 18 years and 1 son, 7 years. I have worked for the State of
New Mexico child care bureau for almost 25 years, getting ready to retire. My
husband passed away almost 2 years ago. Please include my email address in the
newsletter, I'd love to hear from my old friends and would be pleasantly
surprised if anyone remembered me. Thanks for the great surprise, It was very
nice. Alice (Owens) Wisniewski”
Linda Smith - (Thanks to Joyce for getting her in contact) From a message sent by Linda: “Hi, Keith: Joyce Hall and I resumed contact about 2 years ago and she sent out your recent message with all the updates on our class. So, I thought I might join in. Would love to be in touch with some of the old group! So, here's the brief update: After TVCS, went to college at Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY. Did the 4-year thing there double-majoring in Studio Art and Psychology. Did an exchange student program during college in Florence, Italy and fell in love with the city. Left half of my heart there, but came back, finished college and moved to Boston to attend graduate school in 1983 at Lesley College. Got my MA in Expressive Therapies and became an Art Therapist. Been living and working in and around Boston since. Also was a professor in the Expressive Therapies Graduate School at Lesley College for 5 years part-time. Focus of my work has been with children and families experiencing poverty, trauma, etc. Went back and forth to Italy and moved there for a bit in 1990. (Had to come back because I was an "illegal alien"! oh, well, what can you do?) Back to Boston after that move. Had a beautiful little boy named Luca in 2000 who is now 3. He is the joy of my life. Working at Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program doing child and family therapy with families experiencing homelessness in the greater Boston area. Love my job, love my son, and love my life - wouldn't change a thing...
So, that's it in short! Hope you are well and
thanks so much for being the conduit in reconnecting everyone! I really
appreciate the effort and hope that even though we've missed our 25th Reunion
opportunity, we can pull something off for 2008! WOW - there's a shocker!
Anyway, be well and enjoy your holidays. Thanks again and Happy New Year! Feel
free to publish my e-mail address and home address below: Take care,
Linda”

Phil Petersen – Married to Kristine. Lives in Poughkeepsie. Working in a bank.
Ed Gruner - Hey Keith, I wanted to go to the reunion, but I was short on funds. I lived in San Diego for the past nine years. I'm rebuilding my house right now. I lost my house in the Cedar Fire that hit San Diego County back in October. I will try to make the next get together. Are you going to post pictures from the event? This is what been going on with me since High School. I joined the Navy in December of '78. I went to Advanced Electronics and Communications School in Vallejo Ca. and Cheltenham Maryland. During that timeframe I got married and was stationed on the USS Nimitz in Norfolk Va. till December of '84. After I got out of the Navy in '84 I moved to Vacaville Ca. There I got a job with SAIC contracted to NAVELEX Vallejo. There I worked in Naval Satellite Communications to support the Navy as a civilian. I lived there till the BRAC in '95 and was moved to San Diego. I switched companies to RCI then back to SAIC to follow the contracts that I was attached to. I'm now working for SAIC contracted to SPAWAR here in San Diego. I'm now working more in the Systems and Network Engineering side of the house. I guess this is kind of a brief status of things. Last time I was back in the Grahamsville area was in '88. I want to visit back there to see how things have changed. I really wanted to go back for this event to see everyone. Maybe the next time will be better for me and I will make it. You keep in touch and tell everyone I said hi. Now that you sent the email address list maybe we all could drop a line now and then. Ed
Tim Bardwell - Hi Keith. Tim moved from down there in 1982, he came to Scotia and has been here since. He's worked as a press operator for 13 years at Capital Printing (where we met). He has 3 sons and a stepson. Tim Jr. 22 Mike 20 Cody 5 and my son Chris 16. He still big into basketball, he plays on a team every Thurday night despite a knee injury that occured while playing. Most of what free time he has is spent playing with Cody or working in the yard. Thats about all I've got... if you can think of anything else you'd like to know just email me. Kerry Bardwell
Rich Kovacs - He came back to the area in 1991 to visit. He is married and they had two daughters. As of a couple years ago, he was working for Engineered Valves as Chief Product Engineer in Lancaster, PA. From a message sent by Rich (thanks to John K for getting me his work address, would never have found him without that): “I was very pleased to receive the Class of 78 Newsletter. Thank you for taking the initiative. It's great to look up old friends and family. I'm embarrassed to say I haven't kept up with TVCS people very much. I went to the reunion in 88 and corresponded with John Kocijanski a little bit after that. Some bio information: I graduated from Univ of N. Carolina - Charlotte in 1982 with mechanical engineering degree. I worked for the local Charlotte electric utility, Duke Power, from 1982 to 1990. I took a job with ITT Engineered Valves in Lancaster, PA in 1990, and I have been there ever since. The name of the factory has changed, but we're still part of ITT Industries. My wife Cindy and I were married in 1988, and she came with me to the reunion that year. We have two daughters, Katie age 12, and Abby age 9. Like I mentioned, it's great you are taking time to bring old friends together. It's a lot of work but it can be very rewarding. I think as we get older, we increase our appreciation of our old friends and family. Perhaps you or some of our classmates remember my younger brother Jim. For the last few years, he has been doing genealogy research. In this process he managed to locate some of our paternal relatives in Hungary. I never knew my father. I knew little about him, and nothing of his parents or siblings. I frankly never expected to learn more. To make a long story short, Jim took the initiative to close the gaps. He contacted our relatives in Hungary, who were surprised and delighted to hear from their U.S. relatives after 42 years of no contact. In May of this year, I joined all four of my brothers, our wives, and all of our kids, on a trip to Hungary to re-connect with our relatives there. It was a fantastic experience - once in a lifetime. Our relatives were great; welcoming, hospitable and loving. We look forward to building on these new relationships. I have attached a couple of photos from this trip. One shows me with my brothers and some of my Hungarian cousins posing in front of the house of my grandfather. This is in the town of Varoslöd where my grandfather is buried, along with my grandmother and my aunt. The other photo is me with my wife and kids, in Budapest overlooking the Danube. (you can view cropped version of 2nd photo on www.tvcsalum.org - Keith) I hope this is not too much information. Again, thanks for making the contact. You may share all of the above in the newsletter or as you like with other classmates. Best Regards, Rich "Ernie" Kovacs”
Leesa Kurtz Stolbach - I got an email from her a couple of years ago. She lives in Boston and works in Art Education. Refer to www.newartcenter.org, and http://www.newartcenter.org/forms/Fall2003.pdf From a message sent by Leesa: “Thanks for hunting me down. I enjoyed the photos and hearing about the class of 78. I am tempted to begin my story by coining a popular reality TV phrase "it has been an incredible journey". Yes it's embarrassing but I love those shows. They crack me up. Anyhow here it is. After school I hung out in PA, then NY before moving to Boston. I moved to Boston to work with abused children from the inner city. I did that for 7 years. That was hard and rewarding work. I still can't believe I had it in me. I met my ex husband and moved to Boulder Colorado. I taught art and did a lot of painting in Boulder, which is the good part. I hated being there and missed Boston. This resulted in divorce. I then moved back to Boston, met my saucy English man and moved to London. I loved being in London. We traveled to Paris, Ireland, and Wales. We moved back to Boston and I began teaching at various Art Centers. I became the director of education at the Kendall Center for the Arts. A job I loved. The center had a fire and burned to the ground. We lost the center for good and I decided to continue teaching in Belmont. I opened up my art school for children 4 years ago. It's a blast and I am doing well. I am working on a web page and will keep you posted. Stephen and I have been together for 12 years. We have a dog named Jack and a cat named Arthur. We continue to travel to England to see our friends. I still travel to Paris when I need a major art fix. So that is the short version of my life story so far. cheers, leesa"
Tim Sosnowski - (from a message sent to John) "After working for International Paper (over thirteen years) I went to education. I was employed at the "Cooper Union For The Advancement Of Science And Art" in the Analytical Instrument Laboratory for about five years in lower Manhattan (chiefly teaching, research, and working with instrumentation). Presently I am working for an international medical diagnostics company based out of Italy. My position involves automated robotics and infectious disease testing throughout North America and internationally. I have been on the road for a while with a very hectic travel schedule." He currently lives on the south side of Long Island and is remarried.
Rick Fairbairn - He's an OR nurse in Horton Hospital. He has been in the nursing field for a while and has been at Horton for 3 years. He said it was the first time since he had been there that he met up with anyone from TVCS.
Joe Flynn - Last I heard he was married and working in Monticello at security alarm business.
Kevin Thomas - Last I heard he was married with children and was an X-Ray tech in Kingston.
I've also seen Christine Diana Sarosy around. She is married and has children. I've seen her at the sunday school in Monticello my children go to. Per Dorothy McGuire Conklin, Christine lives in White Lake

I usually see Ruthie 1X a year when she comes to visit her family and we call or write a few times during the year.
From a message sent by Ruth: "I don't know where or if you would want to include my information other than what Alice provided. She did a good job with the summary. Eric and I have 3 children, My son, Alex, just turned 18 years old and it brings back such memories of that stage in life of graduating from high school and heading off on a new adventure to college. My daughter, Erin, will be 16 in March. Rachel is 6 yrs. old. We left New York State after he graduated form Cornell and I from SUNY in Cobleskill. We have lived in many states - OK,MS,LA,TX. Then went overseas to Aberdeen, Scotland and England. Came back to the States. TX for a 2nd time, then to Alaska. From there we went back overseas to Kuwait and England (again). Now we are living outside Houston, TX. I have been a fulltime mother for the past 18 years. Eric works for BP Oil Company. Take Care, Ruth Dixon"
Carol Denman - Owns/operates the Hillside Greenhouse in Liberty with her husband Dale Vandenberg. They have 3 boys.
Laurie Erath Mansfield - Lives in the Syracuse area She is still acting in Dinner theater (per Laurie "doesn't do this much anymore" - keith) (refer to http://www.homestead.com/prosites-janrod/CTCproductionpix16.html and http://www.homestead.com/prosites-janrod/CTCproductionpix13.html , she is Laurie Bridges in the second link) and manages the cosmetics dept in a Department store (Carousel Mall). I think we've arrived at last to the final version of this newsletter. Thanks to John K, Alice, and Lynn for the additional classmate information, they have their own sections in this message. And to Donna, Lisa, and Phil G for the sustained enthusiasm. As well as to Sylvia and Debra Terbush, Joan Hall, Joyce Hall (Rice), Carol Dexheimer, Eileen Doherty, Clayton, Rich K and Keith E for the information and help they provided. And special thanks to Bob Finch for creating the alumni website, if not for this site, this newsletter may well never have happened or be not nearly as complete if it did. We have bio information for 49 people and just location information for a dozen more, not half bad for a graduating class of 66 people. And have a direct and indirect e-mail distribution of over 30 people. Take a look at the photo section for the 1950's on www.tvcsalum.org, you'll find many scans there from 5 of my Mom and Dad's yearbooks, including individual pictures of each of the seniors for the years 1952, 53, 54, 55, and 59. And check out the 1978 photo section for some contemporary (or nearly so) pictures of a few classmates. Also on the very last page of this newsletter, you’ll see a message from me on how this newsletter came to fruition. So put on your Big Chill CD, here’s our class:
Alice Dexheimer Karsko - Occupational Therapist near Wilkes Barre, PA., she's also involved with Vacation Bible Studies, has a 7 year old daughter, 3 year old son.
Phil Galvano - Runs the Galvano Golf Academy in FL. married with two children. refer to www.galvanogolf.com, Phil’s e-mail address is posted on the alumni website.
- keith)

Mike Burnich – From a message sent by Mike:
“I've been meaning to get back with you since
the beginning of all this correspondence to give a little update, and say thanks
for the effort on your part. I guess
your final note/this being Christmas season was finally enough to get me off my
Actually, the work's
interesting and varied, and I like it here very much. Except for a
very short stint in PA, I've been here the whole time. I get up to N.Y
occasionally to visit the siblings.
I was last up there in '98 and saw Lynn
while visiting my brother Steve in G-ville. I haven't kept in touch with many
since back in the 80's, I do speak with Leesa K. every once in a while and we
try to keep up
with things as much as possible. I
recently earned my real estate license and am planning on doing some of that
too, but in the meantime I've met the fabulous Lindy, who
is a realtor here, and has agreed to
marry me in April. I've been married once before: no kids, one dog.
So......life has been busy lately, but very exciting, with lots to look forward
to. I run a little off and on.....mostly off lately, but plan
on getting back to it soon.......after
the holidays....sure I do......
I have another e-mail I can be reached at:
mburnich@yahoo.com
That might be better for the newsletter, but if
you get back to me, this address is fine. Take care Keith, and thanks again
for bringing us all a little closer.
-Mike Burnich
p.s.--Feel free to share any of this as
you please, including e-mail” Mike’s e-mail address published on the
alumni website.

I worked for the Adirondack Mountain Club in New York, Denali National Park Wilderness Centers in Alaska, the Appalachian Mountain Club in New Hampshire, the Yellowstone Association in Wyoming, and now Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. I survived a grizzly bear attack and cancer. I married a great woman named Wendy Zug and we have three young girls, including one from India and one from Kazakhstan. It's been a fun ride." (Good thing I always save jpeg when I find web pics, those pages seem to mysteriously disappear or change sometimes, funny how that happens – keith)

I haven't been in touch with anyone from Grahamsville since 1989. I worked as a nurse from 1982 until 1998. I went into Deaf Education, and have been working for Cobb County Schools for the past 5 years. I am married to a great guy, Rob, he's a geologist. We have a small farm about 50 miles outside of Atlanta. We have horses, dogs, cats, chickens, etc. We have chosen not to have children. My Mom and brother Steve live in the neighboring county. My sister Cindy lives in Birmingham, my brother Jeff is in Memphis, and brother Bill is in New Paltz. I'm really into the horses, training and riding. I was into showing for 5 or 6 years, but that got to be stressful. I spend most of my spare time with them. We also like to go to the north Ga. mountains periodically. Rob's parents live in Jacksonville, Fla, so we visit there also. Thanks for sending the letter! Will stay in touch! Lisa Edison Rogero" Lisa’s e-mail address is posted on the alumni website.

Ken Punter - Lives in Ravenna, MI. Still runs, mainly 15K's. He's no slouch neither, placed 41st out of over 5000 runners in a Chicago half marathon three years ago: http://www.runningnetworkarchives.com/caa/results/chgohalf00all.html
Best wishes, Becky” Becky’s e-mail address is posted on the alumni website.
Thanks for the great surprise, It was
very nice.

Hope you are well and thanks so much for being the conduit in reconnecting everyone! I really appreciate the effort and hope that even though we've missed our 25th Reunion opportunity, we can pull something off for 2008! WOW - there's a shocker! Anyway, be well and enjoy your holidays. Thanks again and Happy New Year! Feel free to publish my e-mail address and home address below: Take care, Linda” Linda’s e-mail address is posted on the alumni website.
Information below provided by John Kocijanski
Some bio information:
I graduated from Univ of N. (you can view cropped version of 2nd photo on www.tvcsalum.org - Keith)
I hope this is not too much information. Again, thanks for making the contact. You may share all of the above in the newsletter or as you like with other classmates. Best Regards, Rich "Ernie" Kovacs” Rich’s e-mail address is posted on the alumni website.
Present
